At 1,600 metres I realise one of my team is in trouble. Altitude sickness has hit him extremely quickly and he cannot stand. At this height it’s rare but he looks terrible — his face a grey-green — and he is unable to speak properly. We should be only 30 minutes’ climb from the hut but I see no option but to go down. The snow is getting deeper…
